Evelyn Swift Young Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was given in memory of Evelyn Swift Young, Class of 1937, by her family in 2021. Evelyn Swift Young, daughter of Lawrence and Martha Nugent Swift, was born in Groveton in 1919 and grew up there with her parents and siblings. Evelyn married Clifford Young in 1937 and they raised their six children in Stratford Hollow and Groveton. Evelyn was a loving wife, caring mother, fantastic sister, beloved daughter, and the best friend anyone could wish for. Throughout her life she experienced a little of many things, such as living a farm life, small town life, and paper mill life, and she was an occasional veterinarian, rescuer, and restaurateur. There is a story of joy and challenge behind each of these experiences. Evelyn graduated from GHS as valedictorian of her class in 1937. Although she was unable to continue a formal education beyond high school, she was a strong proponent of education. She would be humbly proud that this memorial scholarship will help future GHS seniors to continue their education.
